The Historic Rock Walls of Grates Cove
Due to the shortage of trees in Grates Cove, the residents were very ingenious in their method of dividing their land and establishing the boundaries of their vegetable gardens and gardens for cattle grazing. They used the plentiful supply of rocks in the area and created the very distinctive rock walls that you see here today. One can only marvel at the strength of the men and the tools they used to put the large rocks in place. They are located in areas where even today you would not be able to get with machinery.
The rock walls have been designated as a National Historic Site. This area has picnic tables and affords you a stunning view of the community and the ocean. It also marks the beginning of one of the many walking trails throughout the community.
